Wave Summer Goodbye With These Outdoor Workouts

Hey, hey fitties! I don't know about you all, but I'm starting to feel like fall is in the air. Although summer doesn't officially end for another month, we've had some chilly weather in the city. If you've been following my blog for some time, then you'll remember that back in June, I started exploring outdoor fitness series. Since the warmness of summer may disappear sooner than later, I thought I'd create a schedule of outdoor classes/events that you can attend for one full week. If you're in New York between August 10th - August 16th, wave summer goodbye with me before it's too late. And yes, every single suggestion is perfect for a small budget! Happy Training xo

Thursday

Citi Summer in the Square. Presented by Paragon Sports and the New York Health and Raquet Club, Summer in the Square is a fitness series that features workouts led by Union Square's most popular studios and instructors. This Thursday (8/10) is the finale of the season, so definitely make it over if you can! Check out the line-up of classes below.

Friday

Body Combat with Dodge YMCA. It's the end of the work week so let your emotions flow by striking, punching and kicking your way through calories to superior martial arts-inspired cardio fitness. The instructor will lead you through a workout which combines upper and lower body moves using power training, muay thai, and karate. I've been training in Muay Thai for 6 months and would recommend martial arts to anyone looking for a workout that is centered on discipline, technique and mental clarity!

Saturday

Summer Streets NYC. Ran by the Department of Transportation, Summer Streets NYC is an annual event that takes place for three consecutive Saturdays in August. About 7 miles are shut down to traffic for New Yorkers to engage in all sorts of fitness and exercise. Summer Streets is modeled after events from around the world like Paris Plage in Paris which I got to visit during my year teaching English in France! There's something for everyone to do from formal classes (Pilates, bootcamp), art-making, bike riding (rentals are provided if you don't have a bike), zip-lining, food demonstrations, free samples, concerts and the list goes on. It's become a fun tradition for my brother and I to go every year, but apparently, he's getting to old to join me now #growingpains. This is hands down my favorite fitness/wellness event of the summer season. You'll see people of all ages enjoying the outdoors and connecting with the community.

P.S. The event starts at 7am and if you're interested in zip-lining, you need to get there by 6am to get a spot in line. I have never gotten there early enough to zip-line, but a girl can dream, can't she?

Sunday

Zumba. The weekend is coming to an end so keep the good vibes flowing by dancing the afternoon away. Dodge YMCA fitness instructor Alma Bonilla will be leading this class. ZUMBA is a fusion of Latin and International music, utilizing dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness program. The routines feature aerobic training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.

Monday

The Rise NYC. Rise and shine with a group of fitties who are the true definition of committed. Rain or shine, these folks don't make excuses when it comes to working out. You can expect a 30 minute Tabata-style interval workout: 20 seconds of high intensity work followed by 10 seconds of rest. Then repeat! Exercises include sprints, burpees, squats, situps, box jumps, step ups, pushups, dips, and other “no-frills” exercises.

Tuesday

The Sweat Sessions. If you haven't checked out my blog post on the Sweat Sessions, you can do that here. Basically, it's a free fitness series put on by the Meatpacking Business Improvement District and the Wellth Collective. Every Tuesday (or just about) from May-August, they’ll be hosting three 45-minute classes at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. This week's class is KORE, a full-body, high intensity strength, cardio, core and resistance training set to a club inspired atmosphere.

African Dance. The New York Restoration Project, a non-profit that creates and restores beautiful public spaces (parks, gardens, open spaces) for New Yorkers, is putting together a FREE African Dance Class at the Target Community Garden in Brooklyn. Shake the stress away each Wednesday evening with our free fitness dance class, featuring moves from across the continent. No dance experience required.
